Every doctor practising in New Zealand must be registered with MCNZ. If you're not eligible for registration through another pathway, MCNZ requires you to sit and pass NZREX Clinical — a pass is valid for five years from your exam date.
Passing NZREX Clinical is not the final step. Candidates who pass must then secure a first-year postgraduate (PGY1) training position with an MCNZ-accredited provider before they can actually be registered — and MCNZ has no control over the limited number of these positions available each year. This is an important, often-overlooked part of the pathway.
